I had the opportunity to catch up with my good friends Gaz and Cory-Ann from PokerNews on the weekend.
Gaz has recently moved into his new penthouse on St Kilda Road… niiiiiice…
After handing me a beer, and giving me the grand tour… we decided to play some Nintendo Wii golf…
No motorised buggies for us… hey… we’re not lazy…
I was of course a Wii virgin… but in the first three holes against Gaz… I was one under the card… pure luckbox stuff… fluke chip-ins… drives inadvertently cutting doglegs… draining monsterputtens…
But then of course… I started to THINK about what I was doing…
I ended up going through the next three holes… in 7 over… including a horrendously painful and demoralising 5 putt…
Fortunately Cory arrived… and not a moment too soon… as it temporarily saved me from further embarrassment… and we headed out to dinner at Red Emperor…
The wine flowed… at least for Gaz and I, as Cory was driving… the food was fantastic… especially the rather large… and suitably delectable Pinchy…
After dinner, we retired back to Gaz’s for a few quiet drinks… confident and ready to take another… albeit slightly less stable… attempt at Wii…
We mistakenly challenge Cory to golf… so she promptly… and ruthlessly… hands us our arses on a platter… and by a substantial margin…
Gaz and I of course both openly blame the wine… but secretly feel suitably emasculated nonetheless… thanks Coz…
But then… a couple of days later… and to my surprise… I actually pulled up sore… I had “delayed onset muscle soreness” in my right bicep… which is kind of strange, as I never get sore playing real golf…
Personally I think it was from trying to rip a drive over the water on the final hole… repeatedly… about 8 times… all unsuccessful… Kevin Costner “Tin Cup” style…
But full credit to Wii… you do actually have to put some energy into it…
So I think their new slogan should be…
Wii - Making the Inanimate… Animate…
P.S. I so want Wii now…
(Edit: Two weeks on… I consequently now have Wii… and newfound soreness)
